Acne Scar FAQs

Can acne be prevented?

While there are many risk factors that can be controlled, not all breakouts can be avoided. In the past, it was thought that factors such as diet played a much larger role than it actually did. The same is true for many other habits.

Now, the general consensus among scientists seems to be that if your genetics make you likely to develop acne, habit changes may have no effect. However natural sediment buildup in the pores can be treated, and our acne scar removal treatments can address damage that has been done.

Why do acne scars develop?

Acne scars develop in situations where acne exists untreated for too long a time, or where bad breakouts have created wounds that are large enough that they don’t heal as easily as the rest of the surrounding skin.

What causes acne scars to become less visible or disappear?

There are a range of treatments, many of them available at our acne clinic in Vancouver, that can treat acne scars in different ways. Many of our treatments work by refreshing the surface layer of the skin with fresh new skin cells. Chemical Peels and Microneedling treatments both work this way.

Can someone under 18 pursue acne treatments?

Certain acne treatments for adolescents are approved, though our treatments generally target the scars that develop during late adolescence outbreaks. Those under 18 cannot elect for cosmetic procedures without the permission of their parents, and even then, some treatments are simply not effective or safe for minors.

Are the treatments permanent?

That depends on the treatment you choose, as we have several here to choose from. Some of the options, such as microneedling will rejuvenate the skin for months, at which point some of the redness may return. Other treatments can achieve lasting results where the skin heals over completely.
